The characters are well developed and quite believable. From there, things spiral out of control very quickly. The adventurers were interesting in parts but the focus of the book on "London" results in their adventures away from London being summarized quite tersely. The story of Justinian and Theodora is first and foremost a beautiful and touching love story. Too much evolution thrown in, the language of this strange people was annoying, and Burroughs' storytelling powers weren't up to snuff. Granted, that's kind of the point of the book, and it really isn't a reason for me to regret buying it, but I really do feel like it's worth a mention early on before I get any further.
